Preventing Internet Explorer updates.

I have a system that has internet explorer 6 on it. I have seen where you can
restrict the update of IE6 to IE7 but I'm unsure how to do it. Installing
other programs are not affected, but when you try to install IE7 on top, it
won't let you.

Does anyone know how this is completed?

What do you mean by "it won't let you"?

Are you running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3?

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!

(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after

Hi PA Bear, thanks for writing. The laptop was just imaged so in effect it's
brand new (XP Wise). There are only corporate approved programs on it. It
currently has IE6 and I want to go to IE7. When I try the IE7 install
downloaded from Microsoft, it gives the following error:

The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer.

Now I assume that since the image is fresh, that this is some sort of
registry entry but I cannot find it on the net. I've been on IE7 for some
time before the new laptop so I'm used to it and don't want to go back.

It's XP SP2.

Was a company Image used? If so and you no longer work for the company,
why?

That suggests that there is a security policy preventing installation. If
you are the owner of the laptop then you should be able to override this
using your administrator account, however if this laptop is owned by your
company you will need to contact their IT admin staff to override this
policy. You will need admin access to the laptop to be able to override
this, and if you don't have that then no amount of searching for registry
entries will help.

PA Bear was only pointing out that you shouldn't be doing this if you don't
have permission to - if you were an employee here where I work and you
tampered with a company laptop I'd have you fired on the spot (and yes, I
have that authority as I'm the IT manager and my company policy prohibits
tampering with company owned IT equipment).
