Discussion:
IE 6 debug errors

Some users in my group are getting the "a runtime error has occurred debug"
errors which force the IE brower to close and "runtime library" errors.

I checked the following but the users had these options checked already:

-Within IE, go to Tools, then Internet Options, then the Advanced tab

Turn on Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer) and Disable Script
Debugging (Other)

Turn off Display a notification about every script error

I also did this, but they already had the right things checked/unchecked:

-Within IE, go to Tools, then Internet Options, then the Advanced tab

Turn on Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer) and Disable Script
Debugging (Other)

Turn off Display a notification about every script error

Is there anything else I can try?
Thanks

Both 'Disable script debugging' options shoud be checked/enabled.

The 'Display a notification...' option should NOT be checked/enabled.

If the above settings do not resolve the crashes, you've probably got a
hijackware infection on your hands which could very easily spread to every
other machine on the LAN.

Hello,

Try running IE with add-ons disabled

Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced (tab) > UNCHECK "Enable
third-party browser extensions" > OK

Run IE6 now.

If it works now, one of your add-ons is causing the problem. Start Internet
Explorer as normal, Tools, Manage Add-ons, Enable or Disable Add-ons.

Disable all the add-ons. Enable third-party browser extensions in Internet
Options.

Restart your browser and enable the add-ons one by one till the problem
appears and you get the culprit.

FWIW, IE6 does not have an option "Manage Add-ons, Enable or Disable
Add-ons". That was introduced in IE7.

You are talking about a specific case, i.e.:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, when used with:
the operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)

I don't see how you made that assumption that the OP has that
particular setup. Can you please enlighten me?

Hello,

Most PCs are updated to at least SP2 now. You may be right that there is no
evidence that he/she is running SP2.

However, it isn't a problem. If the user is not running SP2 and above, the
case of the user being knowledgeable of whether SP2 is installed in his PC
is slim. Introducing a technical question like 'do you have SP2 installed'
may further confuse the user and avoid the whole possible solution he could
have performed.

So if the option Manage Add-ons is not there, all he/she has to do is report
back and we will advise him accordingly.

"Most PCs are updated to at least SP2 now" is a broad statement.
What you refer to as "SP2" is not a version of IE available to all
operating systems, though there is a version "Internet Explorer 6 for
Windows XP SP2".
PCs cannot update to XP SP2 if they don't have XP, e.g. a PC running
Win98 cannot update past IE SP1

I agree that the OP should report back with more detail.

Because I have time on my hands at present I will put my 2 cents in and nothing to
do with this post. I had the Manage Add Ons in my IE6 Properties\Programs with W2K3
SP1. Then again I am running W2K3 now SP2. Told you only my 2 cents :-)
