Did you delete any thing the IE directories?
Try to restore the system to an earlier date and see if that will help.
If the above didn't help try this:
Boot up in Safe Mode and try the uninstall from either command prompt or
Add/Remove programs in control panel.
From command prompt type this in the Run text box:
%Windir%\ie8\Spuninst\Spuninst.exe click [OK] or Hit Enter on your
keyboard.

If still no Joy try to run the local search engine for this file:
hmmapi.dll.mui (size 32 KB)

And copy it to here:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\en-US\hmmapi.dll.mui
Reboot and try the uninstall.
Make sure there is no Security software running in real time protection mode
and block registry changes (also if you been successful try to turn ON back
again).

Run this command if all the above didn't help:
sfc /scannow

I'm having the same problem. I try to open that file and it says it's
unknown to Windows. It won't finish uninstalling ie8. http://support.
microsoft.com/kb/957700 just tells how to do what I was already doing and
can't continue because hmmapi.dll.mui can't be copied. There is no solution
to fixing the problem for that file that I can see. Please help. Thanks in
advance.

Which version of IE and Windows (not just number and maintenance level
since I suspect your locale will be a factor too.)

In any case I would try to find out where all the hmmapi files are
and what they're called. For example, I don't have a .dll.mui
but I do have a .dll.000 (whatever that is.)

Try this in a cmd window:

cd /d %windir%
and
dir/a/s hmmapi*

Here's where I have that .dll.000 thing:

<cmd_output OS="XPsp3 (EN-US)">
Directory of F:\WINDOWS\ie8

2005-07-25 09:51 39,936 hmmapi.dll
2008-04-13 20:11 38,912 hmmapi.dll.000
2 File(s) 78,848 bytes
</cmd_output>

Oops. Now I have found that I do have a .dll.mui but it's under %ProgramFiles%

E.g. in addition to the previous two commands you would have to add

cd /d %ProgramFiles%
and
dir/a/s hmmapi*

For example, that shows me this:

<cmd_output>
Directory of F:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\en-US

2009-03-08 14:22 12,288 hmmapi.dll.mui
1 File(s) 12,288 bytes
</cmd_outut>

Does the uninstall log show you where it is trying to find that file?
In any case you could get more clues by running ProcMon
to capture the uninstall procedure's registry and file accesses.

There are several other suggestions in that archive!!
Why didn't you at least refer to them, whether you used them or not
(they would change things) and your results from trying them?

Also you dropped the cross-post which PA Bear tried to provide the OP.
Re-adding that though now the discussion will be even more disjointed.
