Post by rogeepeteRunning IE6 on Win XP
Now getting a recurring message that I should upgrade or go to FireFox.
Any reason why I should not go to IE7 or is it IE8 now?
No reason whatsoever. However, if you have not upgraded to SP3, consider
first upgrading to SP3, then upgrading Internet Explorer. I believe a direct
upgrade to IE8 can be rolled back to IE6 if you have SP3 installed first.
In any case, before upgrading from IE6, remove all third party "stuff"
(Toolbars, Browser Helper Objects, and the like) first. Run an AV scan,
using the latest definitions for your AV application. Run Malwarebytes, just
to be sure (you can run it on a presumably uninfected system. It will just
verify that your system is clean). Make sure that Windows XP is current all
other ways (preferably including SP3). And disable your AV before applying
the upgrade (be sure to re-enable when finished).
Stripping IE6 to the bare bones is essential to a successful browser update.
As is making certain that Windows is patched, and your system is entirely
clean of malware. If you like loading your browser with every toolbar under
the sun, you can add back those that you removed when you are done, and
after you have given your update IE a test spin.
