Discussion:
"Google.url", "Yahoo.url"...

Greetings, group. A few days ago I was playing around with
settings in my Windows 2000, and I somehow managed to screw
up the icons on the "Links" bar in my IE 6.0. The icons
used to read "Google", "Yahoo", etc. But now they read
"Google.url", "Yahoo.url", etc. This pushes the right-most
3 icons off the end.

If I try to manually rename an icon by removing the ".url",
the icon GOES AWAY. (It becomes "no longer a link".)
So that won't work.

So... how do I get the ".url" to be hidden again, like it
used to be?

(Note that I took a look at the "always show extension"
checkbox on the file-type settings screen for url files,
and the checkbox is NOT checked. So that's not the problem.)

Hi Robbie,

Why not just delete them and start again.

The Google and Yahoo addresses are well known (http://www.google.com and
http://www.yahoo.com )

Just delete the old links from your Links bar (right click on the icons and
select Delete from the drop-down menu), then navigate to the Search
homepages above, then Select the Add to Favorites menu from the IE Favorites
menu.

May I suggest that before you add the above links that you first create a
new folder in your Links toolbar (use the Manage Favorites menu in the IE
Favorites menu) called say AAA- Search Engines, and then add your new links
to Google and Yahoo to that folder. That way they will always appear at the
very front of your Links toolbar.

Regards.

Hi Robbie,
Why not just delete them and start again.
I don't think that that will help. ; )

There is definitely something not working about the Hide extensions
option, at least for the .URL extension.

E.g. you can prove that it does something by using it and then
using AutoComplete in the Address bar by typing Links\
But other than not showing the .URL extension for those entries
the extension is still showing in the Favorites menu, the Favorites bar
and in an Explorer window when Favorites is open in one.

The symptom does not change after a boot and it also didn't change
when I deleted the Menu Order value. (Previously I had a non-sorted
set of Favorites and Links.)

So far the only thing that I have found which suppresses the extension
is the Folder Options View option:
Hide extensions for known file types
which does more than what I would expect just unchecking
Always show extension
for File Type: Internet Shortcut should do.

I suspect it is going to be a case of bits being turned on somewhere
when it's checked not being turned off when it's unchecked but I haven't
taken the time to test this hypothesis.

FYI

Robert

Hi,

In addition to Rob's and Rovbert's answer (I'm feeling bit of lonely with
that strange name of mine - meaning: strange in this thread)
- .url is the file extension for an internet shortcut
- it shouldn't be visible, even if Hide extension for known file types is
unchecked

There is a thread about hiding .url file extension at
http://groups.google.com/group/opera.bookmarks/browse_thread/thread/00bdca18059808e8

I haven't found anything more specific for the time being, sorry.

Kind regards

Hans

Use that Check box. That creates a value named
AlwaysShowExt. Rename that value to NeverShowExt.

Ok, this reply is about 6 weeks late, but better than never.

Some weeks ago I'd asked about a problem in which my IE
"Links" bar shortcuts were screwed up, with the (should-be-
hidden) ".url" extensions showing. After a couple days,
I saw no reply here, so in desparation I googled some more
and found some suggestions, which I tried. They seemed to
have no effect, but after the next time I restarted my
system, the problem WENT AWAY. So I have no idea of what
fixed it. Oh, well.

But I see now that 3 days after my post, some kind folks did
reply to my message. Thanks to all who replied.

Hmmm. Not sure if that was what I did that fixed it or not.
Don't remember now. But I'll keep that setting in mind in
case the problem recurs in the future. Thanks for the tip.
