Discussion:
Slower SPEED after Ie6 installation

i have several machines

on one of them,
i had w98 and ie5 and ethernet router;
i used the "TCPOptimizer" little software and
my ADSL download speed was about 6.5 MB,
ok!

then i installed ie6 SP1,
i used "TCPOptimizer",
but my download speed is only 2.5 MB

it is not a browser matter, because i have several downloading softwares
and all of them is about 2.5 MB
(while previously they were about 6.5 MB);

in my opinion is something related to Windows' overwritten network settings

important note:
on the same router, i have plugged a second machine,
with W98 and ie6 SP1 too, but with USB connection;
the speed is about 5.7 (as it is alwayas has been)
so the router is ok

any idea of what settings an ie6 sp1 installation can modify?
this is a nasty situation

Is the Win98 machine fully patched at Windows Update?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE6 SP1?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

The fact that the Win98 box may not be fully patched and that you don't have
a valid & functional anti-virus application installed and that you're not
using a firewall suggests that you have bigger problems than slower
downloads.

The computer should NOT be connected to the internet in its current state.

Backup your personal data, then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

i appreciate your concern about my security
but i pretty know what i do
i'm a desktop programmer (and hold several pc)

i have no virus
i never got one
i never (and repeat never) activated activex, javascript, java, flash (only
plain html code runs on)
only few fully secure old softwares are installed

i know almost all w98 files and registry entries

my guess is that a networking setting has been overwritten;
maybe i'm not in the right ng;
i'll find a more pertinent one...
first of all i'll try to restore ie5 back, but i'm afraid it could not do
the trick...

"a",
Depending upon your hardware, video card, RAM, processor. IE6 or IE6 SP1,
may not be able to run correctly on a PC that has Win98 First Edition, or
even 2nd Edition installed, depending on the hardware that is installed on
the PC.

I have an old Packard Bell MM955 ,w/AMD K-6 333mHz, 128 MB EDO RAM, that
came with Win98FE. And I could only update it to IE/OE5.5. When IE6 came
out, I had problems with it, and had to revert back to IE/OE ver. 5.5

Win98 First Edition came with IE/OE4
Win98 Second Edition came with IE/OE5.0

i got my speed back

i had a backup of W98 with ie5
so from another partiton
i deleted the current 'Windows' folder
and the current 'Programs/Internet Explorer' folder
(because they were slow, as you know)
and replaced them with the old 'Windows' and 'Internet Explorer' folders;
so I got ie5 (and its speed) back

then i installed ie6 sp1 again,
run TCPOtimizer to tune it up,
and all was ok (the speed was still there)

i dont't think i had a virus

i think i received some unwanted file from a Windows Media Player
or Flash Player sort of automated updating tasks;
files that were too heavy to run

or ie6 sp1 was(is) vulnerable even when processing and rendering
only plain html code indeed (no javascript, activex, java... activated);
ie5 never gave me problem about this

-----

also, previously, while surfing, i could hear a sort of "click" on every
clicked link,
but now I can hear it no more;
so in my opinion some .dll was overwritten by new "singing" (and slowing
down) versions
(also because what type of virus could have been a virus that revealed
itself by letting you hear a sort of "click"?)
