Discussion:
IE Setting Causing Destination Host Unreachable???

Hi all,

I have a PC running IE 6.0 trying to access an HTTPS site and the user is
getting "Destination Host Unreachable" in the title bar and a blank web page,
even though the status for loading the page is showing "Done". If the user
runs a tracert to the site, it works fine and I can see all expected hops to
the destination server. Access to this site used to work before we switched
it to HTTPS. Networking team has confirmed no firewall blocking. I'm
suspecting an IE setting is causing this. I've googled this but can't find
any info. Hoping someone out there has some suggestions to look at.

Thx

Much more info needed.

What's the URL and who "switched it to HTTPS"? Can the HTTPS page be
accessed on other machines (running IE6 or IE7)? Does this happen on the
machine-in-question when attempting to access any HTTPS page?

Are you the owner of the PC running IE6 that's having the problem? What's
the full Windows version of this machine (e.g., WinXP SP2; Win2K SP4)? What
anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is the
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Is the machine fully patched at Windows
Update?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

URL is on a Intranet site so it's not publically visible. The page can be
accessed by all other users who need to access the site. Not sure if
attempts to access any HTTPS page results in the same for this user - waiting
to hear back from the user (she is at a remote location).

I'm not the owner but I know it's XP SP2. AV is Norton Enterprise and up to
date. No third-party firewall and I do believe the system is fully patched.

No - these systems are completely imaged once received so any previous
instances of such software would have been wiped.

That could be scripting in preparation for a redirection
which fails. Use View Source on your "blank" page
to see if there is some scripting or other means of redirection
evident that way.

and I can see all expected hops to the destination server.
Which would explain why a script would execute
but do nothing about checking a redirection to a
different server or even to the same server with
a different protocol.

I don't think you know enough about the implementation
yet to be that definite. ; }

Oh? What search terms did you try?
