I startthe morning loging into WinXP (SP2) then try to start IE. It locks up
after the inital window frame comes up. Nothing but a white screen inside an
Explorer frame. I have to use task manager to kill the IExplore.ede then
start it again. It usually takes two or three times then IE starts to work
and runs the rest of the day. I don't believe it is an internet issue as
Firefox will start up immediatly during the same time frame. I tried
updating to the latest patches, updating to IE 7.0 and even uninstalling and
reinstalling IE but no luck. I have checked for viruses and spyware. The
biggest indicator is that it runs the rest of the day after the inital
failures.

That's right. It's a very good indicator of spyware.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
