Cannot access internet

Cannot access internet using the domain name, if i enter the IP numerical
address i can get to the page. Do i have a virus? If so can you tell me the
name and what to do to remove.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

Is this for all sites or just one in particular?

Could be the hostname is blocked in a hosts file? Do you use a hosts
file for spam/ad blocking?

Could be you installed some ad-blocking software. It probably only
checks for alphabetic strings within the URL and why an IP address
doesn't get checked.

Could be you aren't connected to whatever DNS server you are supposed to
use. In a DOS shell, run "ipconfig /all". What IP address is listed
for both your gateway and DNS server(s)? Are they for your ISP's hosts
or for your router? What IP address has been assigned to YOUR host?
Try running the commands in a DOS shell:

ipconfig /release *
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

Then run "ipconfig /all" again. What are the gateway and DNS hosts? If
no gateway or DNS host IP addresses are listed or they are 169.x.x.x,
have you rebooted yet (while the router and cable modem are powered up)?

In a DOS shell, run "nslookup <ipaddress>". What all output is
displayed in the console window? You should get output that lists the
server name, its address, the IP name for the looked up site, and the
site's IP address. Do nslookup work or fail?

Do you connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem or use
dial-up? Or do you run it through a NAT router? If through a router,
have you tried power cycling the router? How about resetting it (should
be a recessed button you press for half a minute with a straightened
paper clip)?
