Hi, on one of our computers, SP2 seems 'ill' with various slowdown and hangup
problems. Most noteable symptom is when IE opens, it takes 24 seconds
(exactly) for my home page to come up. Other computer is ok. And, IE is
generally ok after home page comes up . . . until it slows down and hangs up.
Can I 'repair' from the SP2 CD that I used to install? Or, should I install
SP3? I don't like to install from the MS website, I like the control of
installing from a CD. Is it possible to get a SP3 CD from MSoft? I haven't
found out how to from their website. But, I did order SP2 on CD. Any help
is appreciated. Thanks, bonipie

Installing SP3 before fixing this problem is a bad idea.

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. You might have incompatible add-ons:
Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools
and click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings. Read this
article first:
How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES):

Note that the Reset IE Settings button will delete AutoComplete data (such
as passwords.) Do you have those backed up?

3. Malware already installed on the computer: Help with malware

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971
Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

What is your home page?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is the
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

"Repairing" WinXP SP2 probably isn't necessary...unless you only recently
installed SP2 and the problems started after that.

I would not install WinXP SP3 yet; that being said, WinXP SP3 is available
on CD at nominal cost.
