Why do I now often get an "application error" when I shut down IE6? This
has just recently started happening. See below.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Well, I did the Ad-Aware and Windows Defender, but I still have the
problem -- it's just irritating.

Is the reference numbers in that error message always the same or does it change every time it comes up. The reason I ask is that if it keeps changing then you will need to do as Frank suggested but you need to be using more that just your Windows Defender and Ad-Aware to look for the problem malware

If the numbers stay the same each time when that error comes up then Frank has put you on the right track with IE and one or more of your Add-ons

Okay ---

The reference numbers in that error message always change every time it
comes up.

Apparently I didn't do enough with Ad-Aware. I used it again doing the full
scan this time and deleted everything including the MOUs. So the problem
hasn't appeared again, and nothing seems screwed up.

Thanks everyone!

Try running IE7 without add-ons.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
Internet Explorer 7 (No Add-ons) to start without any add-ons. Try using the
browser and see if problems arise.

If the problem does not occur again, start IE7, go to Tools > Manage Add-ons
and disable all the add-ons and enable them one by one till the problem
appears and you get the culprit.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjunction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
