Hi,
I am running a pc with ME fresh installed. I did all the updates and
everything looks okay but I was having issues first with IE5. It was crashing
and giving me the error that it encountered a problem and needs to close. I
haven't done any web surfing or anything just a new clean reinstall and the
updates. I have emptied the temp internet files and did a disk cleanup. When
I launch IE it loads the web page "aol" and then gives the error and keeps
doing so. I have turned off and restarted and I get the same. I have rebooted
and got the same.
Thanks,
John

Hi John,

Sounds like your fresh install also got the latest (and incompatible with
IE5) versions of the AOL toolbar.

Try starting IE with Toolbars and Browser Helpers disabled.

Control Panel>Internet Options - Advanced tab, uncheck "Enable third-party
browser helper objects" (or something like that... its been a long time for
ME)

Then try starting IE.

If that works you may consider leaving that setting or uninstalling all of
your IE Addons as IE5 is not the most secure platform for Addons and most
toolbars have now been converted to work with IE7 and later.

I would actually recommend that you install and use Firefox v2 instead if
you are using ME. (bite my tongue).

Regards.

Did you uninstall IE6 SP1 *before* you reinstalled WinME?

I did a reinstall/format of Windows ME. Then did windows updates which
installed ie6. My pc crashed again yesterday and came back up with ie5.5.
When I try to reinstall ie6 I get an error that it can't install all of most
of the items and then stops the installation. I looked for ie5.5 and ie6 in
the add remove programs and didn't see either one there.

We already know what you've done. Please answer my question, John: Did you
or did you not uninstall IE6 SP1 *before* you reinstalled WinME?

I appologize. I thought that it was understood that I formated and
reinstalled. So I guess the answer to the question is, no. I did not
uninstall ie6 prior to the reformat and reinstall of ME. I thought that a
format and repartition and reinstall would have cleaned out all the ie 6
files and folders.
