Discussion:
Favourites are not in alphabetic order with "Add to favourites"

This is a different problem from the simple question how to show favourites
alphabetically for looking them up.

in my PC folders and links are nicely ordered when I use the menu "organize
favourites" or just look up an existing link.

But for some reason (I guess I once backed up my favourites by simply
copying the folder and then copied this folder back) my favourites do not
show in alphabetical when I want to add a new link. This means it is hard to
find the right folder where to save the new link. There does not seem to be
any way to change this.

I tried to use the "export favourites" function, then erased all sub folders
in the "fabourites" folder and re-imported the exported favourites from the
created file "bookmark.html, hoping that they would get sorted during the
importation, but they appear again in the same disorder as before.

How can I order my favourites again so that they show in the alphabetic
order when I use "add to fvourites"? Maybe there is some external program?

Windows version? IE version?
In what order do the folders in Favorites display when you attempt to add
a
link to Favorites (e.g., reverse alphabetical order; random order)?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party
firewall
(if any)?

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 *exactly* per the link below (which
automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party
Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this
behavior persist? If it does, do NOT reinstall IE7.

I strongly recommend using

installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Direct Download link:

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

5. Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

Ouch, I hoped it would be easier.
Regarding point 1), behaviour persists in No-Add-ons mode.

I will now take the weekend and try it all. I guess the only alternatives
are leave it as it is or reinstall everything and lose all my settings and
lots of info.
Will let you know the outcome, thanks for now.

I resolved the problem without too much hassle now.

1) I exported the troubled favorites to a bookmark.html file. Bookmarks
there still are not in alphabetical order.
2) On my second pc in the LAN which had a well functioning favorites list I
imported the html file from the other pc thus merging both. The resulting
favorites still worked fine.
3) I exported the merged list to another bookmark.html file
3) I deleted all favorites from the troubled list in "Documents and Settings
..." of the first pc
4) I imported the new bookmark file to the first pc

Everything works fine now, I see all favorites and folders in alphabetical
order now if I select "Add to favorites"
