internet shortcuts (.url) are not working

I am hoping someone can direct me in the right direction.

All internet shortcuts are not working. When I look at the properties of
those shortcuts, the details for the url is missing. The icon for those
shortcuts is now just a generic icon versus an IE icon.

All of my favorites in IE are experiencing the same problem. I can use IE
without a problem, I just can't use my favorites or any internet shortcuts.
I do have mozilla and safari as well and their bookmarks are ok.

I was running IE7 on vista and just upgraded to IE8 to see if that would
fix.

No luck.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Someone else recently concluded that the Vista Indexing Service
may be causing this symptom...

As suggested by you, I used Process Explorer to see which process
had the handles open to the failing favorite URLs.
The answer: CiDaemon.dll. So, using Windows Support Article ID: 899869,
I disabled the "Windows Indexing Service" and saw, first,
the CiDaemon.dll instances killed within Process Explorer,
and subsequently, the URLs removed from IE8's favorites bar
(both within the IE's user interface and also in the <user>\Favorites\Links directory).
