IE6 flummoxed by Java (W2K, SP4+)

In my old version of java, 1.5.0_16, as well as the latest release of
version 6, which I've just upgraded to, I am unable to get java to work in
IE. By contrast, both versions work perfectly in SeaMonkey.

What happens is that java will launch OK, but it doesn't stream, so that,
for instance, a streaming stock chart will freeze with the data shown at the
time of connection. I don't think the problem is site-specific because at
www.time.gov java will launch when you click the time zone map, but the time
will not be displayed, just the message "one moment please".

The only thing I've eliminated as a source of the problem is the firewall,
since turning it off makes no difference.

I couldn't find anything that was a good candidate to change under internet
options (for example the stock quote site is a trusted site), but it's a
complicated place and the solution may well be in there.

See that post. Make sure you uninstall any older JRE versions & delete any
remaining, related Program Files subfolders. (I assume you just installed
v1.6.0_11.)

I did a complete uninstall before I installed 1.6.0_11, but just to make
sure, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it step by step in accordance with
what was on your page. No luck but I did compare the results with my W2K
laptop which doesn't exhibit this problem. Kerio PF configuration for both
shows at least one Java process on the laptop that doesn't appear on the
desktop, a biggie: Java Platform SE Binary.When I blocked it on the laptop
Java wouldn't work, so maybe that is part/all of the problem, although I
wouldn't know how to fix it. Might try to hunt down a Java group, if it's
not too developer-oriented. Thanks.

Compare in what way? E.g. did the Java Console start
in each case? What did the traces look like then?

I see the OP is using W2K SP4. MS and Sun had a court battle over this (java) The OP
is not completely Updated because MS did a critical update for W2K that removed the
MS Java and installed the Sun Java
as per settlement.
This is probably the reason for his issue

Not sure if this supports your conclusion or not, but FWIW the computer is a
three year old white box, and the OS installation was from two sealed OEM
disks (W2K + SP4), then updated through Windows Update. You would think that
WU would take care of problems like that, but in any case if you or Robear
have any suggestions for putting things right, please post.

For the record, according to these two URLs on the Sun website, Java is
installed and working perfectly in IE6:

This is probably the one site on the Internet where it works with IE, at
least for this machine.

The fix turned out to be pretty simple. The default network connection in
the Java control panel is "Use browser settings". When I changed it to
"Direct connection" the problem went away.

Why that affects IE and not SeaMonkey, I don't know, but the more important
question for me is, have I taken Avast out of the real time scanning loop
for java applets by doing this, and if so does that compromise security.

FWIW, on the laptop, which never had the problem, the connection setting is
"Use browser settings".
