Discussion:
asx files won't open in ie7

For some reason, IE7 no longer opens asx files but only allows them to be
saved or cancel. If I save the file and open that, MediaPlayer opens fine.
Also, if I click on an asx file link in Firefox, it opens the MediaPlayer as
expected, so the problem appears to be something related to a shanged
setting in IE7.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Windows version? Is the machine fully patched? What anti-virus application
or security suite is installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

WinXP SP2 or SP3? AVG v7.5 or v8.0? Is the Windows Firewall enabled?

Is this a sudden, new problem?

Do you have a Media Player installed other than WMP? What version of WMP is
it? What happens when you try to open an ASX file?

I have WMP and Media Player Classic installed. It opens in WMP if I click on
the asx file directly or if I open an asx file in FireFox... only fails to
allow a run uption with IE7.
