error when trying to install Silverlight

I was testing the instant viewing feature of my Netflix account; it worked
with Firefox but didn't work with IE ( 6.0.2900.2180 ). So I guessed that
Silverlight was only installed on Firefox, and visited Microsoft to install
Silverlight.

From the Silverlight page that directs from the 'install' link at the top
i'm shown a message that the current Silverlight installation status is
being checked; then everything just stops, and I have that little yellow
error icon on the bottom left with the message "error on page'. The hidden
info reads:

Char: 9
Error: library not registered
Code:0
URL: http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/resources/install.aspx

What am I to do? Reinstall IE?
