When I Right click on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' Icon in the Systray a
window, titled, 'Safely Remove Hardware' opens. that contains,
USB Mass Storage Device,
'ST320423 A USB Device
'Generic volume-[H]

I click on 'Generic volume-[H], then the Stop tab.
Another window, titled, 'Stop a Hardware device' opens. This contains:
USB Mass Storage Device,
'Generic volume-[H]
'ST320423 A USB Device

I select 'Generic volume-[H] ', my 20g external drive, the one I want to
close, and click OK

Another window titled, 'Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device', opens with the
message:
The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now.Try stopping the
device later.
If I try later, the same thing happens,
What is the reason for this?

Thanks for the replies,

When I selected 'Read and rate the response' from my notification email,
this site comes up, but it is a blank page
http://www.microsoft.com:80/wn3/aspx/notifauth.aspx?url=http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx%3fdg%3dmicrosoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser%

with “Done’ in the Taskbar.
Can the 'Read and rate the response' only be activated once?

I had to find the reply manually, by going to the Internet Explorer 6
General Group
(I have no idea how I managed to put it there as it was supposed to be in
(Windows XP General Discussion.)

I went to the hardware site via the address you sent, Vincenzo, all I found
were couple of post replies:
1. Go to My Computer, right click on the Ext. drive and then click eject
from the drop down menu.
I did this but could not find 'eject from'
NB: I am using WindowsXP Pro SP3 Ver.2002

2. Navigate to: Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager
Expand disk drives by right clicking on the + then click on the drive of
interest Select Policies and select 'Optomize for quick removal.'
That will assure that deferred writes are off.
(I carried out this and found that 'Optomize for quick removal' was already
selected
Does this mean that I can just, Turn off or remove the USB I am using while
a program is active.)

Rider for reply 2. If you find that the option is set here for performance
and/or you prefer to make it so, you should err on the side of safety and use
the safe removal facility or else only remove or shut the drive off when the
computer is powered off.
(To be safe I might turn of my computer, and then disengage any USB I am
using, then start up again )

As to your second address. I am 80, cannot get any local help, and don’t
like the idea of installing this program.

Vincento,
I have no intentiion of posting to (Internet Explorer 6 General),
I thought that I had sent it to, (Windows XP General Discussion.)
I had a look at setting up Outlook Express to access Microsoft newsgroups:
But at my age it looks too complicated for me.
I assume that, accessing Microsoft newsgroups, you are referring to,
Outlook Express/Tools/Accounts and setting up a 'News' account.
Quite some time ago I started using 'Internet Account News' but as it
generated a lot of junk mail, I stopped using it.

Thanks Frank,
I find it hard to discover what the program is that is running in the
background.
Is there a way to find out what is running?
When my AVG scanner is running it puts anothe AVG icon in my ststray.

When the game is over, the King and the pawn share the same box.

Thanks Frank,
The only way I can find out what is running is to use CTRL+ALT+DEL
There possibly is another method but it is beyond me,
